Nygården dead ICE pits from ice age along Jälmåleden
Along the Jälmåleden at Nygården you will find a number of death pits from the ice age. A death pit is formed when an ice is retreating for some reason and an ice block of larger sizes is detached from the ice mass. They are lying and buried in sediments and deposits that came with the water under the ice. The ice block then remains in the sediment and holds its form due to the sedative effect of the sediment. Eventually, though, it melts away and a hole is formed inside the sediment, once it has formed a death pit. This can be the boat dry or water filled.
Below are different variants of death pits and how they can be formed.
